Following months of controversy, the Amazon-owned streaming platform, Twitch, has officially banned referral links to gambling.
Gambling streams have been a major point debating point for the Twitch community, with certain high-profile streamers earning vast sums through sponsorships with gambling websites. Calls from other high-profile streamers for a ban has now led to Twitch taking action.
From October 18th, streamers will be prohibited from broadcasting gambling sites that include slots or dice games that are not licensed in the US or fail to provide what they call “sufficient consumer protection.” However, websites that focus on sports betting, poker and other types of gambling will continue to be allowed on the platform. Twitch says that it will share more details in the weeks ahead including, updates to its gambling policy, before the new rules take effect.
